Overview<\/h3>\n

Growth from the circulation with green techniques (KASKI)<\/strong> project aims to respond quickly to the increasing demand for circular economy. This is done by developing a circular economy environment that can be replicated in different parts of Finland. The main goal of the project is to boost business opportunities related to circular economy in the area by utilising next-generation technologies.<\/p>\n

The KASKI project continues the work of the previous CircLab project<\/strong>. The CircLab demonstration environment<\/a> has created a solid foundation for the development of the nutrient cycle and circular economy. Based on the studies carried out in the CircLab project, it is possible to find new business opportunities in industrial side streams and waste.<\/p>\n

In the KASKI project, the plan is to research fish scales as a raw material to produce chitin and chitosan as well as purification of fish processing plant waters with the help of microalgae. Properties of produced algal biomass will be studied to understand the best application possibilities and business opportunities.<\/p>\n

The project explores new business opportunities and innovations around circular economy. The demonstration environment will be further developed by exploring the business opportunities of algae technology as well as identifying the best practices of European algae centres.<\/p>\n

In the KASKI project, the development of the circular economy transcends industrial boundaries, thus enabling finding new business cooperation and new business solutions that have the biggest employment impact.<\/p>\n

The project starts the development of S\u00e4\u00e4skenharju Circular Economy Park<\/strong>. S\u00e4\u00e4skenharju is an old landfill site that will be re-used according to the strategic plans of the municipality of Ii, and the project will instigate investment activities for a circular economy centre. The goal is to utilise 98% of the materials, and to meet this goal a new kind of operating environment and tighter corporate network are necessary.\u00a0 The aim is to build the circular economy centre so that it is easy for companies to locate there, and the services are built to facilitate circular economy development. The project also implements material flow optimization to guarantee the results of the project.<\/p>\n

The area is located some six kilometres north of the Ii city centre. The planned size of the area is 70 ha.<\/p>\n

Project Partners<\/h3>\n

Along with Micropolis, the project partners are two research units from the University of Oulu, and Iilaakso Oy. There are also plenty of business partners in the project. Project partners are presented on this page<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Results<\/h3>\n

The project is funded by the European Regional Development Fund through the Council of Oulu Region. The project is funded as part of the European Union’s response to the covid-19 pandemic.
