Improving Water Protection in Forestry by Retaining Ditchwaters in Drained Peatlands

: 4.5.2021 – 15.11.2022

In this project we map all potential drained peatland areas in the Iijoki River basin, which could retain ditchwaters and thus decrease nutrients and sediment loads to Iijoki River. The mapping algorithm utilizes a geospatial data and is validated with field measurements of four pilot areas. As a result, the method of utilizing drained peatlands for water protection is scaled up to the whole country, and a specific plan for the Iijoki River to implement the water protection method is developed.
